Motivation in the New Year

A new year is upon us and if you are like me, I am thinking ways to be kinder to myself this year. But that can be hard work because we live in a frantic, high paced, and product oriented world. The result is we find ourselves in the same place this time next year.

Instead of making grand resolutions to be kinder to yourself, think small. Just like the Bill Murray character in What About Bob, “baby steps” will create a major shift in your overall well being.

In order to actualize these small steps, it’s necessary to create small attainable goals. An activity I ask my clients to do is create three small daily personal goals and professional goals. At the end of each day see if you reached these goals. If you did, GOOD JOB! If not, think back to what brought you closer to that goal and what pushed you away.

Try to do this for one week and then do another week. Pretty soon it will become a habit. If this doesn’t work for you, then take the concept and make it your own. There is no one way to attain goals or feel like you keeping you motivation up. The most important thing is to be kind to yourself when you reflect on your progress.
